Free international training and education to develop your careers 

Rob Fagan, our newest blogger, will be promoting free training and education in our chosen fields for everyone, regardless of nationality or location. In the vast majority of cases access to the various resources and courses does assume access to the Internet.

Around the world there are thousands of general and specific courses to help humanitarians, first responders, and disaster response professionals to grow and develop throughout their careers.

The first resource I would like to highlight is one of the biggest and best in the United States and that is the Federal Emergency Agency’s (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute (EMI) in Emmitsburg, Maryland, which offers online, on site, and community delivered emergency management training courses.

In order take a course or access its resources, all international applicants must register for a FEMA Student Identification (SID) number here. Click on the ‘Register for a FEMA SID’ box in the center of the screen. Next, follow the instruction and provide the necessary information to create your account. You will receive an email with your SID number. Save this number; it will be needed to register for courses and examinations.

You’ll now have access to hundreds of high quality emergency management courses and you can select one here. Click on the link ‘Interactive Web Based Course’ to enroll. After you have completed the course, if you wish to do so, you can click on the box to take the exam and receive a certificate (you will need your SID number to take the exam).

Courses are not the only valuable tool offered from EMI. With your SID you may also access Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs), which are searchable learning content objects and the Higher Education Programme course curriculum.
