Photo essay: Training Nepalese monks and nuns in community emergency response 

Dr Behrouz Moghadasi, who has been training volunteers in disaster management across Nepal, presents some images of the Khoryug Nepal Project, which involved training 40 individuals from eight monasteries in Nepal in CERT.

After five days of full time training, workshops and a field exercise, eight CERT teams are now in place, each one working in a monastery.

The programme is moving on to train more monks and nuns in another part of Nepal. Says Moghadasi: “When emergencies happen, CERT members can provide immediate assistance to victims and give critical support to first responders. In the long term, they will help to promote general safety awareness.”

So far, the project has already trained and equipped 200 monks at 16 monasteries in Nepal, involving more than 20 drills and field exercises in disaster preparedness.
